Zoo Hardware strengthens escutcheon accessibility with RNIB approved Braille

Zoo Hardware has strengthened the accessibility credentials of a popular door lever set to support visually impaired users.

The brand’s ZCS030LL Lift-to-Lock Return to Door Lever Sets now feature The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) approved Braille, making them more accessible than ever for visually impaired users.

Previously, the escutcheon plates displayed the words “lift handle to lock” laser-etched directly on the surface. While this method was clear in some finishes, visibility could diminish in certain lighting conditions or on darker materials.

In response, Zoo Hardware has redesigned the plates with high-contrast, bold printed lettering and Braille that has been officially approved by The RNIB — the UK’s leading authority on sight loss.

This enhancement underlines Zoo Hardware’s ongoing commitment to inclusive, user-centred design that combines functionality, style, and safety.

Jack Burford, Product Development Designer at Zoo Hardware, said: “Accessibility needs to be factored into all elements of design in order to reflect the world around us.

“We’re proud to have introduced improved features, including RNIB approved braille, to ensure our products offer both practicality and inclusivity for the widest user base possible.”

The new escutcheon plates are now in stock across the ZCS030LL range in satin stainless steel (SS), powder coated black (PCB), and PVD satin brass (PVDSB) finishes, with powder coated white (PCW) and PVD Satin Bronze (PVDBZ) to be introduced in stages to ensure a smooth transition across all finishes for this product

Spare plates featuring the new improved features are also available from January to upgrade existing products across all finishes.

Zoo Hardware designs and manufactures a comprehensive range of architectural hardware for the commercial and residential sectors.

With a focus on quality, innovation, and design excellence, Zoo Hardware continues to deliver products that meet the evolving needs of modern environments.
